Here are three projects to get you started. First up, my short film Paddleball Hole, in which two animated characters discover a portal from their world to Santa Monica Beach where they cross paths with two real-life beachgoers. My inspiration for this idea came from animation/live action mashups like the famous sequence in Mary Poppins. I drew each frame on paper using traditional animation techniques, then removed the backgrounds digitally and placed the characters on top of the live action beach footage.
Second, here is an animated commercial I made for a print shop in Tucson, Arizona. This assignment introduced me to the wonderful world of Adobe Animate, and I haven't turned back!
Third, a blast from the past. In 2009, this animated music video received the Audience Choice Award at the Intelligent Use of Water Film Competition in Los Angeles, California. To create the unique stop motion animation effect, I placed cutouts, leaves, and dolls on top of a window screen, pointed a spotlight down at them, and positioned the camera so it only captured the shadows. Even though my skills have improved since then, I'm still proud of this video. Someday I would like to create a remastered version of it. Until then, enjoy!
